Female Genital Mutilation – Sounds bad doesn’t it? And now a judge has ruled that the U.S ban is unconstitutional! That may even be worse! No, nothing could be worse.
FGM is practiced by many African, Middle Eastern and Asian countries. In 2016 UNICEF estimated that 200 million women in 30 different countries have gone through some sort of FGM. The idea is to control a woman’s sexuality, purity, modesty, etc..
Types of FGM range from symbolic nicking to removal of flesh (clitoral glans and even labia and vulva) all the way to having the vagina sewn closed with a small hole left for urination and menstrual fluids. If sewn closed at a later date the hole is opened for sexual intercourse and opened further for giving birth. Different methods for opening are used, from cutting to tearing to ripping by the husband’s penis.
We all know that this practice is barbaric and is intended solely to keep women under control of the male members of society. Here is an excerpt from the website Listverse:
There are zero health benefits from female genital mutilation, only health risks that are often deadly. Some of the immediate results of female genital mutilation are severe pain, excessive bleeding, the swelling of the genital tissue, fever, infections, tearing of the genital area, problems with urination, inability for the tissue to properly heal, injury to the surrounding genital tissue, and in severe cases shock and death.
There are also long-term consequences of this act, if the woman is able to make it through the immediate complications, such as urinary problems (including urinary tract infections and painful urination), vaginal problems (including discharge, itching, and bacterial vaginosis), scar tissue problems, extreme pain and even tearing during intercourse, difficulty with intercourse, tearing during childbirth, the need to resuscitate the child after birth, and infant death. Furthermore, there are psychological problems that may follow female genital mutilation such as depression, low self-worth, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, sexual dysfunctions, difficulty becoming aroused, sexual dysfunction due to trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, other stress disorders, and many other complications.

U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman in Michigan has ruled that the ban is unconstitutional. And then dropped the charges against two men (and others) who performed the procedure on underage girls. While admitting that the practice is despicable he ruled that Congress “overstepped its bounds” by banning the procedure.
Time Magazine reports
” Friedman dismissed the main charges against Jumana Nagarwala, a doctor who prosecutors said may have performed the procedure on up to 100 girls. Another doctor who allowed Nagarwala to use his clinic, that doctor’s wife and five others also saw their charges dropped. The doctors continue to face lengthy prison terms on conspiracy charges.
According to the court records, two of the mothers tricked their 7-year-olds into thinking they were going to Detroit for a girls’ trip. Instead, they had their genitals cut.”
Who cares whether Congress “overstepped its bounds”? Who cares whether it should be a state ban or federal ban? The practice has to be stopped! For fuck’s sake we are living in a modern world where this type of male dominated, religious bullshit should have disappeared. What kind of religion can think that it is wrong for a woman to be sexual, to be in control of her own body, to be human?
I’m all for people believing in their God if that is what they need in their lives. That doesn’t mean they should mandate that all others believe the same.
