Faith vs Abuse…Which Do You Want To Hang On To?

I am not a religious man. Lately you might even call me anti-religious. I don’t mind religion. I don’t mind religious persons. If truth be told sometimes I’m envious of the unwavering faith some people have. I could never have that kind of faith in something that cannot be proved to me. People have tried, it just doesn’t work on me.

Over and over again we hear the stories of sexual abuse by powerful members of the Catholic Church and the great lengths they go through to cover-up their deviant behavior. How can anyone go to a Catholic Church and pray knowing there is a good chance that the man at the podium should be banned from society and locked away for good. I know that not every priest is a pervert, but it is getting harder and harder (maybe a poor choice of words) to believe that any one in the Church is a protector of our children.

We have reports of hundreds and maybe thousands of children in Pennsylvania being abused and raped by the very adults they were raised to respect. This is on top of the thousands of children that have had their lives ruined over the years by these predators.

As a society we must find a way to weed out the priests, nuns or anyone that uses the Church as a backdrop to provide validity to their actions. As radical as this may sound it is time to close down every Catholic Church in the world and rid our society of this menace. I am singling out the Catholic Church because we don’t hear much about the other religions. If this behavior is rampant in other churches then we must do the same. The Pope can no longer hide in the Vatican and pretend this is not happening. The true faithful must take a stand and take up the gauntlet. Being one of the non-faithful it is easy to see why this sickness has been allowed to continued for so long. The true faithfuls believe that God will deliver them from harm and that His disciples can be trusted to take care of the Flock. Obviously this is not the case as our children suffer at the hands of these despicable followers.

This is an over simplification of the problem. And not being privy to the insider’s knowledge of the Church leaves me a little out of the loop. But as I read/hear the reports coming from around the world there is little doubt in my mind that any religion that condones (by covering up, or even endorsing) these actions should be eradicated from our lives.

We are humans first and religious followers second. As humans we must protect the innocents from harm. If any religion does not protect the innocent then how can anyone have faith?
